About Us
AEF was created through a partnership between Bongani Mdluli and Christopher Hoffmann.
Bongani was one of the first high school graduates to go to university from the region (the University of
Swaziland). While still a university student he sought to open the door for others through providing school
supplies to those unable to afford them. Christopher Hoffmann taught high school math and science at that
same high school as a Peace Corp volunteer. He subsequently remained closely connected with Bongani, the
community, and others in Eswatini. He is currently a faculty and a clinician-researcher at the Johns Hopkins
University School of Medicine.
In 2008, the African Education Fund was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization (IRS 501(c)(3)). AEF
relies on donations to support our activities. Importantly, all of our projects are community initiated and
maintained through community labor (and at times small amounts of financial support).
